Students come to school with the disease of ignorance, thoughtlessness, confusion, indifference, prejudice, etc. The doctors see their responsibility to be that of diagnosis and treatment. Their sicknesses make them incompetent to diagnose or treat their own kinds of sickness. In a tragic way the doctors in educational institutions may treat their patient students in ways which confirm the students' sicknesses. The students' diseases may in reality be strategies for coping---and the doctors' treatment may confirm those strategies and make them permanent. By the use of their sick strategies the students may gain their doctors' attention and affirmation. They may become professionally sick and continue on to higher levels of treatment in graduate schools which help them refine their strategies of coping, and perhaps become doctors who are permitted to treat patient students in institutions of higher education. Through their refined strategies of coping; i.e., sicknesses, such doctors transmit the diseases which they caught as students. Institutions do not have the power to cure institutional diseases. The diseases which are caused by institutionalization do not respond to the treatment of doctors who have spent all their lives in the institutions which nurture the institutional diseases. Doctors studying institutional diseases within the context of institutions tend to deepen the perverse ways in which their institutions promote the adaptability of the diseases. Their patient students become more sophisticated in their perverse responses to institutional treatment of their sicknesses. Non-institutional contexts may be essential to both the doctors and patients---for them to perceive each other in humane non-institutional ways. They may find it impossible to relate to each other as humans in the context of their inhumane institutional patterns of behavior. Their institutional values and value systems may blind them to each other and maintain their sicknesses through alienation. Greater dedication to and the sophistication of their values will not promote love. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
