Teachers motivate them to learn by offering rewards. Students learn to earn those rewards, rather than for the intrinsic satisfaction experienced in learning. Teachers may thus teach students to be teacher oriented, rather than curiosity and cognitive pleasure oriented. Students who become teacher oriented are imprisoned in the limitations of the teachers they have. They do not learn to think for themselves. The motivation for their learning is the reward they hope to receive from their teacher, not from the learning itself. They do not become caught up in the cognitive process --- because they are caught up in the process of trying to figure out what the teacher wants, expects, and will reward. Their intellectual challenge is to figure out the teacher's system of rewarding. Their teacher may think that the students are trying to learn the assigned material---while in reality they are trying to learn how to please the teacher. Students who excel in pleasing teachers run the risk of becoming excessively dependent upon the teachers whom they please. Such students will find it difficult to learn to think and feel independently. They may learn to lives patterned after their conformal lives as students. Creative students focus upon questions, issues, values, problems, and situations which they chose them for themselves and became caught up in them. Their focus is not upon pleasing any person to earn acceptance or affirmation. Their sense of self-worth is not dependent upon any conformal behavior. They are more likely to demand that their teachers answer their questions ----than to demand to know what questions the teacher is likely to include on a test. They are more likely to bring their excitement of curiosity and discovery to their teacher --- than to try to figure out what topics the teacher regards as important enough to merit concern. Creative students tend to please the best teachers precisely because they are not trying to please the teacher, and are trying to please themselves in ways which the good teachers respect.
