Others go to extremes in their efforts to identify and fight evil. The latter seek to compensate for the former who tend to ignore evil. The fighters fear that through indifference evil will be surrendered to through acquiescence. The fighters tend to become fixated on opposition to evil, and tend towards belligerence as a stance in life. Others seeking to minimize strife often tend towards passivity, inaction, yielding, and smoothing things over. The extremists provoke each others's extremism, and tend not to be creative. The creative people of the world are those who successfully avoid each of the above extremes. They do not oscillate between the extremes, they do not go to the extremes. They transcend the dichotomy represented by the extremes. They neither surrender nor engage in active belligerence. They are not yielding, nor are they obstructionists. They find creative ways of approaching each situation. They synthesize the best of the perspectives of the extremists, and come up with a more balanced approach to situations. They do not merely average differences. Their compromises are based upon transcendence of the biases and presuppositions of the extremists. They find ways out of double binds which paralyze the creativity of the extremists. They work for personal union, rather than for separation of the good from the evil. They promote dialogue between those who call themselves "good" and those whom the "good" call evil. They work to eliminate unnecessary, needless, and avoidable---tension, conflict, violence, fighting, etc. They seek fulfillment through love, not through estrangement, separation, alienation, etc. Their work is not passive, but very active in ways which often are not apparent to the extremists. Creative people affirm rather than ignore, accept rather than reject, acknowledge rather than dismiss, realize rather than destroy, support rather than undermine. Their work is positive rather than negative. They win few battles because they engage in few battles, finding more creative ways of promoting change than through dramatic battles. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
