All too often individuals and traditions occasion the punishment of the honest person and reward the deceptive person---even when the honest person is charitable and the deceptive person is selfish. The prophet who is honest in not rewarded. The child who honestly indicated feelings, emotions, desires, etc. is often repressed. The politician that honestly describes a very difficult situation such as the energy crisis of the 1970's is not generally supported for such honesty. There are few coherent efforts to protect people's right to be honest---beyond those in the constitution pertaining to freedom of speech, press, assembly, and petition. The judicial remedies relating to these guarantees tend to be cumbersome and out of reach to many people. Such remedies are ineffectual in many situations where people need to have their right to honesty protected. The constitutional guarantees of communication (speech, press, assembly, privacy, petition) are the beginnings of broader guarantees of the right to be honest. It may be that legalistic procedures will not be effective in making good on guarantees of the right to be honest. Non-legalistic ways of coping may be more effective in dealing with individuals and traditions which violate people's right to be honest. Such ways of coping may grow as people grow more aware of the importance of people having the right to be honest. When people can not be secure with honesty--- all kinds of perversions develop. People who are not safe with honesty find it difficult to maintain their integrity. They must pretend to feel, desire, enjoy, dislike, think, value, etc. in ways quite other than how they do. They must put on dishonest masks which conform to other people's expectations and demands. Life becomes a deadly game in which contestants compete for personal advantages--- according to ambiguously defined and ever changing rules. Fear and anxiety prevail. Estrangement and alienation are common. Frustration and violence undermine the health and welfare of the community. Is it safe to be honest? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
