A failure to recognize the nature of a student's needs will lead a teacher to fail to meet that need. A technical response to an affective need will not meet the affective need. An affective response to a technical need will not meet the technical need. Within each type of need there is a need to recognize the nature of the need. Sometimes an affective need is a need for sympathy. Attempts to be encouraging when sympathy is needed will not meet the affective need for sympathy. If a student's need is for commiseration, sympathy will not meet the need. Similarly for needs for encouragement, listening, presence, etc. Rarely can one kind of need be met via a response appropriate to another kind of need. Blindness to the differences between different kinds of needs makes it impossible to meet such different needs as students usually have. Sometimes a student's need is for somebody to recognize what the need is. In such an instance the student can not come with an explicit request that a need be met. Teachers need to be sensitive to such student needs and so teachers have a need to be very sensitive. Here the word "need" has been used in at least two ways, showing how easy it is to get confused. "Need" can mean "should" as the second word of the previous sentence. "Need" can mean a necessity as in most other places the word has been used. We thus need to be careful; i.e., we should be careful. Students need to grow through developmental stages which are both intellectual and affective in nature. It is probably true that there are stages and steps which can not be seriously altered as to order; higher steps having lower steps as essential prerequisites. To attempt to help students take higher steps before they have taken prerequisite steps in the intellectual or affective domain is probably foolish. Relatively few college students are securely in the formal operational stage of intellectual development regarding physical reasoning---according to researchers in America following Piaget's work. It would be interesting to know how far along students and professors are in their development stages of affective development. Does higher education ask us to jump steps which we need to take? Which we much take? (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in www.essayz.com Search for Integrity and Honesty (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
