(3) portraying the goods as well worth the price to be paid, (4) building a sense of anticipation of well being due to the purchase, (5) helping the customer integrate the purchase into a developing life style, (6) taking steps to ensure that customers remain satisfied and make their satisfaction known to potential new customers. Teachers are successful academic salesmen if they sell ideas, perceptions, assumptions, skills, knowledge, world views, methods, etc. to students in much the same way as salesmen do. The decisions to pay the price required of the successful student are not based upon logic as much as upon the kinds of factors which determine commercial sales. If the student can not feel comfortable, identify with the teacher, trust the teacher, see learning as a natural next step, see learning as worth the price required, anticipate fulfillment in learning, and integrate the learning into a developing life style--- the student will not buy what the teacher is selling. Students do not usually buy new ideas because they are true, valuable, potentially useful, righteous, spiritual, etc. Students tend to buy new ideas because of the people who present them and how those people present the ideas, as salesmen and saleswomen. All that we do is at a price. Learning is at a price. The price may not be financial. It may be in time and visions lost, in feelings forgotten, pleasures forgone or ignored, in friendships lost, in opportunities for friendships passed by, in beliefs sacrificed, in truths transcended, in outdated ways, etc. Such prices are just as real as objectively real financial prices. Students who are asked to pay such prices will do well to consider if the purchase is worth the price. Responsible teachers help students weigh the prices wisely before making a sale, for responsible academic salesman seek to promote the overall welfare of their students. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
