How do they learn to like subjects? Many students learn to like academic subjects through teachers whom they like as persons. This is especially true of personally oriented students, although not so true of students who are not much interested in other people as persons. Consider the implications of these dynamics upon which students choose to go into science teaching. To be an effective and humane science teacher a person must like both the subject matter of science and students as person---who may not do well in science. Personable young students are not likely to learn to like science unless they are fortunate enough to study science during their formative years under a very personable teacher whom they like as a person. If they suffer under non-personal teachers of science, they are unlikely to learn to like science and so be eliminated from the pool of possible future science teachers---leaving in the pool of possible future science teachers only those students who will not be personable enough to be likable persons. Thus there is a perverse feed-back loop which operates to aggravate the problem---because the problem exists. The problem of unlikable science teachers is the reason that the problem of unlikable science teachers is not solved by unlikable science teachers. We must recognize the way in which students are attracted to and enabled to learn science by the personal qualities of their teachers---rather than by their technical qualifications. The technical qualifications are essential, but not very attractive to personable students who include all the potentially best science teachers of the future. To over-emphasize technical qualifications is to occasion the self-selection out (or exclusion) of personable students who have the potential of becoming our best science teachers. It is very difficult to help an exclusively oriented specialist of graduate school age to learn how to be personably attractive, or to help a "turned off" personable individual---become motivated and able to learn science.
