When machines relate to students better than do people---education has ceased to be educement. It is a sad commentary on the quality of dialogue between educators and students when machines are involved in more meaningful dialogue than are people. As the quality of teacher-student dialogue degenerates it becomes more and more possible to duplicate it, or improve on it, via the use of machines. The ability to improve things through the use of machines indicates that the quality of dialogue has dropped below the level of meaningful personal relationships. The appropriate response is then not to improve on it through the use of machines, but rather to seek an understanding of why the quality of dialogue dropped so low between people who really are not machines. To rise to the capabilities of machines in personal relationships is not a great accomplishment for people. If teaching machines are regarded with awe, reverence, admiration, delight, respect, etc. in the absence of an awareness of I-Thou intimate personal relationships then teachers with that perspective will often view education as that which can be done with teaching machines. Such teachers will often exclude from education whatever machines are not capable of---thus insuring, thereby that students will become automata who interact well with machines. These considerations suggest that it is essential that very personable individuals be central in the development of educational policies. Care must be taken in insure that non-technical people are included in groups of policy makers. Technical qualifications must not be required of all persons who are to take part in the formulation of educational policy---else non-technical people will be systematically excluded from policy councils, and education will become mechanical. The political power structure must not become the avenue by which technocracy is advanced through perverse feed-back loops. It is important to identify ways in which perverse feed-back loops operate to augment an inhumane teaching machine technocracy. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
