Too much of a good thing can poison life. Not even the best part of life is fulfilling if it is all there is to life. Not even the best attitude is universally appropriate. No one world-view is always "best". Each value and good is such only in limited contexts, not in all contexts. Objectivity is not always appropriate. The scientific approach does not make sense in intimate personal relationships. The analytic approach does not promote union and mutuality between friends. Concern for efficiency is hardly helpful in promoting the growth of friendship. There are many values which we tend to absolutize, as if they were always appropriate. When we absolutize values we lose balance and fall down in those situations in which we lack balance because of absolutizing our values. We would be baffled by a dancer preoccupied with knowing which was the right foot to stand on all the time. A musician seeking to find the right note to be held forever would leave us equally perplexed. A dietitian who sought to identify the "best" food to be eaten to the exclusion of others would not be promoting life. We could not understand or identify with a painter who chose one shade of one color for exclusive use in all painting, no matter how pretty that one color was. The politician who is concerned about only one issue does not get very many votes. A doctor cannot promote life by using one drug to treat all patients because of a conviction it is the best drug. We lose our sense of balance in many situations, however: We may think that there is only one right way to see reality---because there is only one really-real. We may persecute those who answer questions differently than we do---because we believe there can be only one right answer to those questions. Those who seek truth in a different way than we do may become the victims of our scorn---because we know the only right way to seek truth. We may be persecuted for having more than one very intimate friend---because most people believe that we should have only one very intimate friend at a time. Our lives would all be richer if we helped each other maintain balance in all ways of living. Why don't we? Why not start? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
