Personal spontaneity is not normative with regards to laboratory behavior! Virtually all laboratory steps must be taken in accordance with logical considerations. It is only very rarely that some creative insight/vision occurs outside the bounds of deductive logical consideration, and contributes positively to the progress of the laboratory work. Even creative steps occur within the framework of a tightly disciplined and structured effort. The scientist's professional life is one of following the broad outlines of rather well-defined routines; sometimes piecing different routines together in new ways. Creativity is often the novel piecing together in a new way some routines which had not been connected before. Thus even creativity involves disciplined routines. Expression of primary emotions, feelings and desires is not an integral part of the scientist's life. They may be ignored without serious impairment of the scientist's professional activity. As scientists become accultrated to their professional sub-culture they tend to fall into routine patterns of behavior. Their lives tend to become complex patterns of routines---coping with new problems consists of developing new routines and combinations of routines with which to respond. Cleverness has to do with developing efficient new routines through which to respond to new situations so as to achieve previously selected consequences. Knowledge has to do with being able to anticipate consequences, computing the cost/benefit ratio for the consequences of various possible response routines, and selecting the routines which will occasion the most desirable cost/benefit ratio for some decisive group. The professional valuing of routines will often carry over into non-professional behavior. Scientists' private lives may tend towards following routines which are not examined in any non-routine way. Thus scientists may fall into professional ruts and not realize that they are not making any significant decisions about the course of their lives. They may just be following the course dictated to them by their immediate environment, the ruts into which they have fallen. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
