They tend to perceive themselves as being responsible for the achievement of designated goals. As educators they tend to view themselves as responsible for their students' education---and seek to manipulate their students into success. Technocrats tend to relate to students in manipulative ways which lack mutuality. They tend to cast themselves in the role of initiator and their students in passive roles of acceptance of their initiatives. As a result the technocratic educator tends towards making value judgments and methodological choices on behalf of their students. Such paternalism is for the student a natural extension of the paternalism of childhood---and is usually not recognized as perverse by the student or the educator. Yet, the pattern is not educive; rather, it is coercive without love, power, or justice for students. Technocratic paternalism robs students of their responsibility to mature in their ability to make value judgments and to select appropriate ways to realize the values which they choose. Through technocratic paternalism students are encouraged to focus upon I-It relationships to the exclusion of I-Thou relationships; they are encouraged to develop in unbalanced ways. In a technocratic paternalistic educational system students find they have no effective grievance procedure by which to appeal the absurd manipulations of their sincere educators. Their response is thus often an insane pattern of self-defeating emotionally defensive moves through which they seek to protect their integrity. Their insane context elicits from them insane coping mechanisms, which tend to compound the insanity of their context. They may seek to assume the responsibility for getting others to behave properly according to some definition of what constitutes proper behavior in their insane context. As they assume the responsibility for success on the part of others they become "born again" technocrats responsible for the maintenance of their technocratic society. As manipulators they cease to be participants in intimate relationships characterized by true openness, mutuality, healthy vulnerability, and satisfying meaning. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
