The seduction may take any of many forms: religious, legalistic, moralistic, ethical, scientific, technocratic, artistic, literary, political, economic, affectional, perceptual, role-model, sexual, etc. In seduction the victim is mislead regarding values, lead to exclusive values which will undermine the integrity of the victim---while apparently occasioning fulfillment of the victim. Teachers may seduce their students with the best of intentions, while behaving properly according to moral "laws", and appearing to act in their students' best interests, with the blessings of parents and administrators, with all quite out in the open; and it still not be evident to anybody that seduction is in progress. Via collusions the participants and spectators may not recognize the nature of the seductive process; even so students are vulnerable and seduced by their teachers into life-styles which violate their integrity through internalization of conflicting values. Student vulnerability will tend towards equality with teacher vulnerability as the value-conflicts which are present in their relationships are brought out into the open. So long as the students because of their relative immaturity are less able to perceive the value-conflicts, they will be more vulnerable than are their teachers. It is not vulnerability which should be sought, but mutuality of vulnerability. The injustice of the seductive process is occasioned by the lack of mutuality---with the student having less maturity, insight, power, and resource to grievance procedures. Formal legalistic procedures are relatively impotent to deal with problems of student justice related to seduction. Other more positive steps will serve as better preventive efforts than any formal curative efforts are likely to be. Balanced affirmations of students' potentials for integrative living will help occasion mutuality in the relationships between students and their teachers. When their relationships are pursued for the unilateral advantage of any participant, there is likely to be injustice in a seductive process of one kind or another. It is often futile to attempt to make such injustice "illegal". (c) 2005 by Paul A.
