The business of the academic world is the discovery/creation of both new relationships, and new types of relationships of: intellectual, rational, logical, empirical, scientific, literary, and similar kinds. Entry into intellectual professions is usually via the Ph.D. degree---which is awarded for the discovery/creation of new relationships and especially for the discovery/creation of new types of relationships. Initiative and creativity within the academic domain is highly rewarded. Within the business world enterprising persons are encouraged to try out new types of business relationships in efforts to serve/profit. The marketer of a new product/service is welcomed into the marketplace along with the old traditional businesses---and may occasionally run the established firms out of business by offering more timely services/products. Competition is encouraged and there are laws designed to punish those who would seek to monopolize the market and force all into conformity with regard to some product/service. Within the political world the rules of political process are designed to promote competition between candidates for office and between issues seeking priority consideration and allocation of scarce resources. The new candidate with new insights regarding appropriate priorities is encouraged to compete for voter approval--- and laws prohibit the inhibition of such new candidates and new insights. Within the domain of intimate personal relationships the pattern is rather different. Traditions tend to give traditional life styles a monopoly, and often laws, religion, and gossip work together to inhibit the development of timely new types of inter-personal relationships---even though the traditional ones apparently occasion much of the personal frustrations which express themselves in family quarrels and murders, drug addiction, petty crime, organized crime, international terrorism, militarism, and wars of all kinds.
