Those who offer to make such an exchange are perverse, and those who accept such an offer from a perverse person, in turn become perverted. They are turned for the ways of humane living into technocratic systems of reacting. To be human is to be in the process of changing, growing, communicating, being yourself. To exchange the freedom to be human for any technical advantage, possession, status, or opportunity is thus perverse. Technocratic societies seek to promote understandable human behavior---because the understanding of process is more important to technocrats than is the freedom to be truly human. Technocrats are willing to exchange human freedom for the ability to understand and manipulate human behavior---even if it requires that human behavior be simplified down to a level of complexity which is understandable to objectively/analytically oriented technocrats. Thus technocrats behave in ways which tend to constrain human behavior into predictable patterns which are objective in appearance, if not in reality. When so constrained the technocrats find satisfaction in the computation of correlation coefficients and equations for trend curves---according to patterns of deterministic cause and effect. Technocrats who have found their satisfaction in the simplification of human behavior have lost their freedom to change, to grow, to communicate, to fulfill their own unique potentials. They exchanged that freedom for the perceptual framework within which they seem to know so much, and seem to be able to control so much. Yet, their lives fall into very predictable patterns governed by cause and effect---rarely revealing genuine free choices to change the course of their lives. Institutions and technocrats augment each other because their natures are similar. Institutional purposes, intentions, goals, and the like do not protect institutions against the perversities inherent in technocratic/institutional natures. Institutional efforts to protect the freedom to change run the risk of being perverted into efforts to get people to conform to the institutional norms. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
