There is another unlikely alternative: the scientists may undergo a difficult metamorphosis and regain a person- orientation by reaffirming values which are not included in the traditional scientists' value system. This latter alternative is difficult and emotionally painful because it involves questioning the exclusive dedication of most scientists to their narrow system of values. The affirmation of person-oriented values questions the value of many perspectives and behavior patterns which traditional scientists regard of ultimate importance. The scientists who undergo a humanization process experience terrifying threats to the foci of their ultimate concerns. It is thus exceedingly difficult to help an already science-accultrated person become a personable/effective teacher. It is likewise exceedingly difficult to help a person who is already exclusively accultrated to person- oriented values---to acquire the technical competence which is essential to effective science teaching. In the long run the most effective way to prepare science teachers will be to help grade-school children and adolescents make their passages through their developmental stages without feeling the need to adopt any exclusive set of values. They should be provided with a learning environment which enables them to value every possible value in a situational way---recognizing the limited range of propriety. The learning process should assist in developing the concern for, and ability to, recognize the limited range of propriety of each and every value. The grounds for affirming each value within it's limited range of propriety should be made evident, and the grounds for caution in affirming a value outside the confirmed range of propriety should also be made evident.
