I have liked to look carefully and notice what was happening---and try to figure things out. I like to take things apart to see how they work. I have thought that that was what scientists were like. I have looked forward to my first real science class. Today was the day! I was excited! I went to my first real science class with anticipation of all that I would learn and the new understanding I would get. When Mr. Science entered the classroom he looked around (at the students who were enjoying each other's company) in a way which said, "This is a science classroom; you are not supposed to enjoy each other here." The students got the message. Many of them went and sat down and stopped talking to each other, even though the bell had not rung. The more assertive boys kept cutting up, and Mr. Science told them to settle down and be more orderly. A science classroom is supposed to be an orderly place, I guess. Scientists understand by putting things and people into neat orderly patterns. The students sat in nice straight rows. The automatic timer rang the bells and the lecture began. Mr. Science began by lecturing about the theory of invisible atoms and molecules. He said everything was made of them. Since they are the ultimate building blocks for everything, we better start by understanding how they combine to make the things which appear real to us. Mr. Science did not show why atoms and molecules make sense, but since he says they do, and he is an authority, I guess that they do make sense. I tried to learn the facts about invisible atoms and molecules; like that water is make of two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen. Now I can recite that fact well. Toward the end of the class Mr. Science did an experiment to prove to us that what he said was right. I couldn't understand his explanation of why what he saw when he did the experiment proves that he is right---but I guess that he must be right; he is the authority. I decided to learn what he told me to learn and recite. At the end of the class I smiled at him, but that seemed to make him very nervous. I don't understand why; all the boys in class like me. Why should my smile make Mr. Science nervous when he knows so much and understands so much? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
