Their activities generate engineering, philosophical, religious, and social consequences. It is not enough to trace such consequences back to the pure research which apparently occasioned them. It is also necessary to examine the system of ideals and values held in common by the community of scientists. The modern era is dominated by which ideals and values are affirmed by scientists and which ideals and values are sacrificed by scientists. It is important to recognize that ideals and values are embodied in individual human beings who make decisions which greatly affect the allocation of our scarce resources. The allocation of resources is a political process; scientists are therefore engaged in a political process by virtue of the consequences of their decisions. Political processes are an expression of the values embodied in the persons who dominate the political processes. The obvious participants in the political processes are not necessarily the persons who dominate the political processes. The obvious participants may be merely working out the logical implications of the value embodied in behind-the-scene leaders. In practice the dominant leaders may not even know that it is their ideals and values which are dominating the whole political process. Modern scientists do not perceive themselves to be the dominant political leaders---they are usually frustrated by the fact that the obvious political leaders will not accept scientists' overt political advice. Even so, the system of ideals and values of the scientists can, through indirect avenues, exert the dominant influences upon the political process. It is important to recognize those indirect avenues by which scientists' ideals and values permeate our modern societies and their political processes. It is not "science" which dominates modern society. It is scientists as persons who embody specific values who dominate our society. We will be the victims of mythical "science" until we understand scientists as persons and the process by which they come to embody the conventional values of scientists. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
