Under their system of governance most members of the community are cast in the role of children including a few elder brothers and sisters. The role of the father figure is to be supremely competent, authoritative, and benevolent. The role of the children is to be submissive, adoring, cooperative and obedient. The nature of justice is defined by the father figure. No external authority intrudes into the ideal paternalistic community---because all its problems are solved internally. To invite external authority to intrude into a paternalistic community is to say that its father figure has failed to be supremely competent, authoritative, and benevolent. Such an invitation will naturally prompt assertions of competence, authority, and benevolence. Assertions of authority within a paternalistic community are likely to occasion repression of expressions of doubt about the love, power, or justice of the father figure; communications will be blocked and alienation will thus be generated. Sin is the condition of blocked- communication, of alienation, of estrangement. Thus paternalistic communities are characterized by sin with its bitter fruits of frustration, anger, violence, fragmentation, and lack of integrity. Members of a paternalistic community can not be true to their own natures, because they must conform themselves to the role defined for them by the benevolent-competent-authoritarian father figure. There are no provisions for appeal of decisions, judgments, role casting, etc. of the father figure within a paternalistic community --- for such appeal would presume intrusion of the broader community into the paternalistic community. Some paternalistic communities include what might be an external check on the excesses of paternalism---a board of directors. When the board of directors is part of the "happy family" which is the "ideal" paternalistic community, then the father figure has supporters whenever the father figure's decisions judgments and role casting are appealed. Such a board of directors will work to maintain the paternalistic system and its father figure. Justice will be denied. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
