Such an assumption does not recognize the possibility of real tragedy---in which our best and well intentioned efforts generate terrible situations because of the positive values which guide such efforts. There are some problems/dilemmas for which there is no solution. In such instances what is required is to learn how to cope with the absence of a solution. To cope meaningfully with the absence of a solution to one problem/dilemma is to transcend one definition of the problem/dilemma and recognize that our transcendent problem/dilemmas is how to most helpfully/meaningfully define our problems/dilemmas, to ask the helpful questions in the given context. Many problems are defined in exclusively technical terms within cultural contexts which make it impossible to solve the problems. The contexts are often exclusively narrow, excluding broad perceptions of the fabric of threads which interconnect the whole its parts, the objective and subjective aspects, technical and non- technical aspect. Often the definition of the problem excludes consideration of the implications to motivation and freedom to communicate which are present in the definition and the solutions occasioned by the definition. Such definitions of problems usually occasion sin, the condition of human alienation which is the source of many, if not most, human problems/dilemmas. Often the assumption which is made is that the correct solution is God's solution and if appropriate people were "good" people---they would be in tune with God's will and would solve the problem correctly. The failure of people to solve problems then becomes evidence that they are "evil" and in opposition to God's divine will. Such people must be opposed in God's name, and done away with if necessary---at great cost if need be. Such a perspective occasions sin, and so through broken communication aggravates the problems which were not being solved or resolved. One of our central problems is the problem of how to respond to we cannot solve or resolve. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
