They seek ways to transcend numerous blockages to dialogue---so that they and others may know each other more intimately. Lovers are to be contrasted to technocrats. Technocrats ultimately suppose values which undermine dialogue. Thus technocrats and lovers often oppose each other---perceiving what the other values as being evil. Because technocrats do not ultimately value dialogue, lovers and technocrats can not develop an ethos of mutual awareness and mutual understanding. Technocrats tend to be exclusive in their valuing. Lovers tend to be inclusive in their valuing. Thus technocrats promote sin and lovers promote reconciliation. Sin is alienation--- the absence of dialogue. Dialogue is reciprocal, mutual. All participants in dialogue both speak and listen, responding reciprocally to what each other has said. Much conversation is not dialogue due to the absence of listening and of reciprocity. In dialogue listening is completed through confirmation, the listener directly or indirectly asking for conformation of mutual awareness and mutual understanding. In reciprocal give-and-take it becomes evident where there has been misunderstanding or where messages simply were not received or internalized. In dialogue participants seek evidence of mutual awareness and mutual understanding; they are not taken for granted. Lovers seek to uncover instances of lack of awareness and/or understanding and work through dialogue to promote mutual awareness and mutual understanding. We figuratively speak of communication as if it were all verbal in character. Many states of consciousness call for non-verbal forms of communication. In practice it may be impossible for technocrats to identify the mode of communication of lovers. If fact, lovers may not be conscious of exactly how they engage in dialogue---even though they thereby know each other profoundly. Technocrats may dismiss the significance of dialogue which they can not explain or understand, and they thereby promote alienation by ultimately valuing explanations and understanding which facilitates manipulations. Lovers are content in their dialogue. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
