If they can promote doubt in subtle enough ways, they can undermine the confidence which threatens to undermine the fear which they regard as good --- because it is useful to them. Consider the following specific example of this phenomenon. When people start to question the wisdom of legalistic moralism with confidence, they often undermine the fear which is essential to the functioning of a legalistic system. Those who control the rules and regulations of a moralistic legalism --- profit through their power, and stand to gain by maintaining their positions of control over rules and regulations and how they are used. When Love starts to cast out fear by promoting confidence through integrity, legalists stand to gain by promoting doubt which will undermine the integrity, and so the confidence. Thus legalists challenge the "arrogance" and "presumptuousness" of loving people to trust their instinctive wisdom and humane passions --- by legalists reasserting the ultimate reliability of traditions and corporate authority (which they happen to control) relative to the limiting effects of personal biases and selfish desires. Legalists presume to be immune to the corrupting influences of absolute power, and use their arrogated power in presumptuous moves to cast doubt upon the goodness of God-given instincts and passions. The tragic fact is that often neither they nor their victims recognize that such moves are political acts --- occasioned by the legalist's fear of the freedom which love promotes by casting out fear of guilt imposed by legalists upon those who violate their alienative rules and regulations. So long as the victims regard the keepers of the moral code as agents of an ultimate power-- -so long will they doubt themselves and fear to take the risks entailed in trusting the promptings of Love. They will themselves become legalistic and victims. Love moves people to take appropriate risks which help the legalists to come to doubt the wisdom of their idolatry. Love moves to expose the collusions of the legalists --- by revealing that the collusions cost too much to be worth their benefits. ==========================================================
