%TEACH EXAMPLE ROLE MODEL APPRENTICE HERO ADMIRE 960112 We are taught by watching the behaviors of people whom we admire and/or need to treat with respect. By watching people's behaviors we internalize their patterns of assumptions, beliefs, convictions, and attitudes---even though none of them are articulated in words of any kind. We transmit and receive assumptions, beliefs, convictions and attitudes via behaviors which are based thereupon. Only the more creative, imaginative and visionary a person is able to transcend dysfunctional patterns of assumptions, beliefs, convictions and attitudes which they have watched in other people. People who are dull, unimaginative, and of distorted or clouded vision are not able to transcend dysfunctional patterns---and tend to copy them thoughtlessly. Even people who are able to recognize that certain people's patterns of assumptions, beliefs, convictions and attitudes are dysfunctional, unhealthy and disintegrative may not feel secure enough in their recognition to act in ways which lead to their transcendence of what they recognize to be dysfunctional. It takes courage and power as well as insight and wisdom to transcend the influence of addictive organizations and their leaders. See the previous essay. (c) 1997 by Paul A.
