%FEAR OF FAILURE 850905 It is natural to fear the possibility of not succeeding at a task to which one might become committed. It would be embarrassing. Perhaps others would reject you. Perhaps others have already rejected you, and they might seek to occasion your failure so that they could rationalize their rejection of you. If you feel insecure you may doubt other people's recognition of your past successes, and suspect that your successes are insubstantial, not likely to hold up. Perhaps you are really not substantial, and you might be found out to be less substantial that you have appeared to be. Perhaps there are people out there who resent your apparent successes and they might be dedicated to exposing you. It is risky to presume to strive for great success. Perhaps it would be safer not to try to be successful. To justify such timidity one may come up with all sorts of rationalization which are based more on fear than on fact. The presumptions are just that. They are self-referential which often fly in the face of objective facts. Successful people often are driven by irrational fears of failure and rejection.
