People who are explicit about their own-"high"- ideals --- are rarely fully-open-and-honest about their failures-to-fulfill their own-"high"-ideals. 2. People who are explicit about their "superior": theological, mythological, cosmological, moralistic, ethical and/or puritanical systems --- are rarely fully- open-and-honest about the consequences of them as regards: estrangement, alienation, self-esteem, prejudice, arrogance, self-righteousness, extremism, excommunications, fundamentalism, terrorism, crusades, and wars. 3. People who are explicit about their ability to pass "good" judgments regarding other people's failures to fulfill specified standards for "good" behavior --- are rarely fully-open-and-honest about their own failures to fulfill specified standards for "good" behavior. 4. People who are explicit about incoherencies in daily living --- are rarely fully-open-and-honest about the existing and widely shared human understandings of the roots-of-those-incoherencies --- or about known ways to transcend-such-lacks of personal and communal integrity. Most mortals find it personally convenient to be fully open-and-honest only about what they regard as their "strengths" --- and to be defensive, secretive and pretentious about realms surrounding their points of vulnerability. Domineering people are especially "good" at encouraging such patterns of incoherence --- even as they work to try to "make" people conform to their "good" rules, regulations and commandments --- which are often roots of estrangement, alienation, low-self-esteem, prejudice, arrogance, self-righteousness, extremism, excommunications, fundamentalism, terrorism, terrifying- crusades, and wars. It is difficult to articulate-and-present a coherent sense of what are the essential-foundations-for-both- personal-and-communal-integrities --- and then it is perhaps even more difficult to be fully-open-and-honest about imperfections in living-up-to-the-ideals-inherent- in-such- a-presentation. Where we fail to be fully-open- and-honest is often a clue as to where the presentation is incoherent. People who have informal and/or formal responsibilities for helping their community deal with threats to personal and communal integrities and integrations --- need to keep the above kinds of observations in mind --- in order to provide appropriate levels of risk-management with sufficient "safety- factors." Engineers who design and build bridges and other physical structures commonly make them two to-five- times-as-strong as is usually needed --- to be ready for possible-times-of-natural-testing; e.g., during floods, storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, crashes, fires, etc. Similar "safety-factors" need to be provided for: 1. Medical and counseling services in the face of major-tragedies, new-diseases, plagues, terrorism, wars, economic down-turns, energy-crises, pollution-crises, water-crises, garbage-crises, etc. 2. Instances of major down-turns in the quality of public-education because of the economic-drains of prolonged times of terrorism, wars, economic-down-turns, energy-crises, etc. 3. Instances of many people becoming uninformed, un-educated, mis-informed, and mis-guided extremists- and/or-fundamentalists who are prone to blame "other- factors" and/or "other-people" for what is happening in the world --- and so failing to take any responsibility for promoting continued personal and communal integrities. 4. Instances in which people have failed to be well informed about what IS-POSSIBLE, and what IS-NOT-POSSIBLE, in terms of what has been proven and is confidently known by thoroughly honest and competent/successful: scientists, engineers, and corporate managers. The initial set of items numbered explicitly 1, 2, 3 and 4 at the beginning-of-this-essay contain suggestions of considerations which need to be kept in mind --- in order to properly provide for prudent safety-factors in support of both personal and communal integrities and integrations. Prudent risk-management entails anticipating various levels of risk, the costs of being prepared in various ways for various challenges, and ways to balance against each other the costs of preparations and the costs of not making preparations of various kinds. The following negative realities never contribute positively to prudent risk management: dishonesty, blind- optimism, ignorance, prejudices, collusions, addictions, codependent-relations, alienation, greed, injustice, enmity, alienation, depression, dis-ease, contentiousness, arrogance, self-righteousness, etc. Failing to deal with such negative realities never contributes positively to prudent risk management. In each circumstance and situation there are some foci of attention which are inappropriate; and other foci of attention which are highly appropriate --- and a full spectrum of possibilities in between. Which each focus is in the full spectrum depends upon the circumstance and situation --- and upon how the focus is combined with each other focus with or without integrity. Among the foci may be found realities such as: Fears, anxieties, concerns, preoccupations; Concepts, ideals, hopes, aspirations, goals; Priorities, authorities, leaders, judgments, Standards, rules, laws, commandments; Prescriptions, proscriptions, descriptions; etc. We all need to give careful consideration to how each other person deals with the above situations, circumstances and issues. It is dangerous for us to dismiss another person without giving careful consideration to how the other person deals with the above situations, circumstances and issues. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
