Are there misleading assumptions, attitudes, perspectives, or questions which are guiding the combatants? Who can transcend the provincialisms of the combatants and identify what is misleading the combatants? 2. Are combatants stuck on asking over and over certain questions which have not lead to productive answers or outcomes? Should the focus of attention shift to questions which are likely to yield more productive answers and/or outcomes? Scientists were stuck for about 2,000 years asking what kept objects moving. Progress was not made in respect to the motion of objects until it was understood that what was normal was motion along a straight line at a steady speed --- even though such motion is rarely observed by humans. What must be explained is changes in direction of motion and/or speed (Newton's Three Laws of Motion articulate the details of this realization.) 3. Are combatants trying to win at each other's expense; or seeking to truly resolve conflicts in cooperative ways? The former behavior prolongs conflicts. The latter behavior is likely to end conflicts. 4. Are combatants reliving ancient conflicts out of a sense of duty to the victims of those conflicts? Might there be a better approach to dealing with ancient conflicts which have not changed for centuries? 5. When situations are not satisfactory and have long been un-satisfactory --- what might be changed to make for more satisfaction? Keeping everything the same is likely to keep everything un-satisfactory! We need to focus upon changing what we clearly have the power to change: Our own questions, attitudes, approaches, perspectives, thinking, and relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
