It is not enough that what others say is open, honest, accurate and truthful. What others say must also echo the proportions in what self and dear friends say. Any contrast in proportional emphasis --- is taken as a sign that the other person is insufficiently like self and dear friends to be trusted. Disagreements over how much time, concern and effort are placed upon what is said --- can be just as important as on agreeing upon what is said. It is often not enough that statements be beyond a doubt open, honest, accurate and truthful --- if the level of emphases is not close to the same. Risks should not be taken with people who are not UNBALANCED in the same way that we are UNBALANCED. We must stand up for our conviction about the right way to be UNBALANCED. If we are to promote conflict-resolution, peace- making and shalom --- we must understand the various roots of conflict. Some people can tolerate many kinds of differences between themselves and others. Other people can tolerate very few kinds of differences between themselves and others. The latter kinds of people are prone to engender conflicts between themselves and other people if differences relative to themselves are intolerable; e.g. as regards: TRIBAL ORIGIN NATIONAL ORIGIN LANGUAGE CULTURE RELIGION POLITICS PRIORITIES INDIFFERENCES PREOCCUPATIONS FEARS FASCINATIONS FANTASIES SCRIPTURES USED SCRIPTURES IGNORED EDUCATIONAL LEVEL KIND OF EDUCATION KIND OF EMPLOYMENT PROFESSIONAL WORK HOW WEALTHY HOW SPEND MONEY CAUSES SUPPORTED CAUSES IGNORED SEXUAL ORIENTATION SEXUAL INDIFFERENCE FRIENDS CHOSEN PEOPLE IGNORED CONCERNS CHOSEN CONCERNS IGNORED TRUTHS AFFIRMED TRUTHS DENIED TRUTHS CONFUSED TRUTHS IGNORED TRUTHS REPRESSED TRUTHS FEARED GAMES PLAYED GAMES IGNORED COLLUSIONS HONORED COLLUSIONS IGNORED COLLUSIONS EXPOSED COLLUSIONS DESCRIBED The above are suggestive of ways in which some people may be unable to tolerate differences. Levels of tolerance may well be along a continuous spectrum, rather than either total-tolerance or total-intolerance. It may help for us to keep in mind the very wide range of ways in which people may be unable to tolerate differences between themselves and others whom they may fear, distrust, dislike, feel aversive toward, etc. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
