Meta-Process A: The process of objective scientists seeking to understand, predict and control the objective process of some inanimate elemental objects interacting with each other in ways which can be described in terms of mathematical laws of physics; e.g., in the emission of atomic spectra. Meta-Process B: The process of reflexive persons seeing to understand and guide the development of their inter-personal reflexive relationships in terms of their beliefs, convictions, desires, needs and perceptions; e.g., in the process of truly falling in love. Some of the major differences between the two meta- processes may be pointed to by noting that: 1. Meta-Process A entails an essential semi- isolation between the understanders and the understood; whereas Meta-Process B entails patterns of dialogue among the understanders as participants in a mutual pattern of inter-relationships. 2. Meta-Process A entails unchanging elementary parts within the isolated system which is understood by changing understanders; whereas Meta-Process B entails dialogue between changing participants all the way around. 3. In Meta-Process A the unchanging elementary parts of the system which is understood --- do not affect the process by how they regard the other unchanging elementary parts and their relationships; whereas Meta-Process B makes no sense absent any consideration of how participants regard each other and inter-relationships between and/or among the participants; e.g., with fear, envy, anger, desires, attachment, love, disgust, resentment, etc. 4. Meta-Process A can be understood, predicted and controlled by the objective observers of it; whereas Meta- Process B includes the reflexive observers of it --- and so essentially transcends the possibility of reliably predicting how it will develop. 5. The unchanging participant elements in Meta- Process A do not reflect upon their participation in their process; whereas the participants in Meta-Process B are characterized by how they reflect upon how they are changing --- because of their reflections upon their patterns of participation, alienation and internal changes. 6. The patterns which are found in Meta-Process A can be found in larger and larger systems which involve larger and larger numbers of larger elementary parts; whereas in Meta-Process B it is far more difficult to find similarities in patterns as one considers larger and larger systems or as one considers smaller and smaller systems. Meta-Processes of type B are not found at the scale of molecules, atoms, nuclei and quarks --- or at the scale of planets, stars, solar systems, galaxies or galactic clusters. Meta-Processes of type B are not found outside of the communicative inter-relationships within ecological systems of living creatures. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
