They seek to consider themselves as righteous; as different from others who are lesser persons than they are. They devise and focus upon criteria for differentiation between persons --- criteria which puts them in a good spot-light, and other persons into the outer darkness. To maximize the differentiation, they constantly perfect the criteria for passing judgement, and for the justification of the condemnations of lesser persons. 2. Righteousness is defined in conformal terms, not in terms of participating justly in right-relationships; for they are good at manipulating standards for conformity and judgements, but fearful of entering into open and honest relationships in which they would be vulnerable. They are insecure in the absence of familiarity with lovers who are motivated by Love. They reject gifts of true security enjoyed as the freedom to be safely vulnerable in open and honest dialogue within the presence of Love. 3. Perfection is striven for in terms of the elimination of: flaws, blemishes, variations from ideals, doubts, uncertainties, and irregularities. Such striving entails much alienative discipline, coercion, and judgementalism. In the absence of success --- excommunication is regarded as an appropriate tool; excommunication from positions of power, influence, and fellowship. 4. Because differentiation from others who are lesser people is important --- it cannot be important to seek mutuality and balance in relationships. Interest in mutuality and balance will stand in the way of effective differentiation between the good people and the evil people. 5. It is likely to be difficult to find common ground with contentious people, because they have been careful to avoid making any commitment to ideals, values, principles, or scriptures which call for careful consideration of: mutuality, balance, listening, gentleness, personal integrity, communal integrity, tolerance, children, women, and the poor --- when reviewing their own patterns of attitudes, assumptions, commitments, thoughts and behaviors. In their own view they are surely unassailable. They avoid having their confidence shaken by avoiding the possibility of open and honest dialogue with people who might challenge their view. It is helpful to recognize, describe and talk about the behaviors of people who are prone to behave in the above ways; and to seek to truly understand their thoughts, attitudes, motivations and fears.
