Alienation is relational, not individualistic. Each instance of alienation involves at least two participants in an alienative relationship. Usually all the participants in an alienative relationship bear some responsibility for the alienation. Often the participant(s) most prone to behave self righteously regarding the alienation is more responsible for the alienation than others are --- and is (are) most prone to blame/guilt/shame others for the alienation which has developed. An example may help make this clear. In some instances communal neglect of children and young peoples' needs, desires and views leads to alienated adults who turn to crime to get attention, express their alienation and try to full their perceived needs. Their community is likely to pass judgement on them, condemn them, and send them to prison to further alienate them as punishment for their response to their alienation from their community. The outcome is rarely reconciliation and recovery of integrity. Each person involved in an alienative relationship suffers from the alienation. For such a person to act as if the alienation is some other person's (or persons') problem is dishonest --- and likely to aggravate the alienation and its disintegrative consequences. The reduction of alienation is a mutual task which cannot be achieved unilaterally by any one or few participants in an alienative relationship. Alienated people are interdependent in perverse ways --- just as members of an integrative community are interdependent in healthy ways. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
