To achieve our own personal salvation. 2. To achieve being better than others. 3. Of self defense against untrustworthy others. 4. Of separating ourselves from unfamiliar others. 4. Of excluding unworthy & unacceptable others. 5. Of distinguishing between good and evil others. 6. To self-confident self-righteousness. 7. To justify our own arrogance in our own eyes. 8. To control other people's impressions of us. 9. To control other people's thoughts and actions. 10. To increase our power at other people's expense. All of the above means can be vested with the holy garments of high church religiosity---as has been demonstrated by many religious leaders' successes in doing so down through history. It is relatively easy to see how other people have succeeded in the above efforts --- so long as they are far away in time and space from us and our provincial preoccupations. It is exceedingly difficult to see how well we are succeeding in the above efforts described as such --- for we are too close for comfort. So long as we can objectify, depersonalize and de- humanize those who are engaged in the above kinds of alienative efforts --- we can deal with them objectively and in scholarly reports. It is much more difficult to be openly and honestly reflexive in reflecting upon how hard we are trying to succeed in any of the above efforts. Reflexive knowledge is often more embarrassing and threatening than is objective knowledge. We want to know who is good (us) and who is evil (them). We want the forbidden knowledge of good and evil. We do not want to know how often all of our efforts are alienative and undermine efforts to Find Common Ground. Thus we undermine peacemaking efforts to resolve conflicts wherein all participants win together; rather than at each other's expense. In the absence of true peacemaking efforts it is essential that we always be on the defensive with adequate means at our disposal with which to achieve security. Thus we focus our attention upon the above ten key means to security. If we don't defend ourselves, who will? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
