The ambiguity about what we will do on a given day is inevitably eliminated by the end of that day. How it is eliminated is not determined by the passage of time, even though that-it-is-eliminated is determined by the passage of time. In some instances people feel that it-is-essential to eliminate some ambiguity which by its nature could continue for an indefinite period of time. It is their sense that ambiguity is in some sense improper, wrong, bad, evil, etc.---at least it is so in certain circumstances. They want to replace ambiguity with certainty wherever possible; and maybe even in some situations where it is not possible. Life is full of moral, ethical, political, business, spiritual, religious and sexual ambiguities. It is not always clear what some reality, opportunity, challenge, situation, right, wrong, sin, temptation, etc. really is. It is not always clear what of diverse possible courses of action should be and what should not be carried out. It is not always clear what should be the rank-ordering of priorities. As in intricate colored fractal images (which are drawn according to rigid mathematical rules and which appear to have sharp boundaries) what appear to be sharp lines between one color and a different color---are not sharp when examined much more closely as is often done. In fact often what appear to be sharp lines look (upon much closer examination) to be a recapitulation of the complexity of a part of the image in which they appear. The attempt to honestly eliminate ambiguity as to just where the line is, reveals much more additional ambiguity that it was possible to imagine before. Some people seek to eliminate ambiguities by the use of rigid rules, regulations, commandments, prohibitions, prescriptions, proscriptions, expectations, taboos, etc. Such people are often coercive, manipulative, insensitive, unforgiving, intolerant, violent and disintegrative of persons and communities. They often unknowingly help to generate alienative relationships which engender evil in its many forms. They are usually ignorant of the experiences of the people whom they affect; for they have alienated themselves from most people. They often view themselves as "saved" and those from whom they have alienated themselves as "not yet saved" or as "beyond the possibility of salvation." They are rarely seeking to be true to themselves and to each other. Honesty is not something which they value highly. "Respectability" appears to be something which they value highly. They work hard to appear to be respectable without concern about honesty, integrity, authenticity, responsiveness and health. It is the appearance which counts. See the next essay.
