If a machine does not work properly, the engineer/mechanic seeks to identify which part is at fault so as to remove the defective part and fix or replace the defective part. People who are in the engineering mode are likely to look at a community and perceive the community as made up of many parts which have been put together to constitute the whole community. If the community does not function properly the communal engineer is likely to look for the part/person who is at fault so as to remove the defective part and fix or replace the defective part. The defective part is at fault; guilty of making the community malfunction. The process of fixing the community often entails making the defective people feel guilt/shame and so to be alienated. The typical person in the scientific and/or engineering mode, is not likely to be sensitive to the importance of alienation and estrangement in the dynamics of dysfunctional communities---and so be ignorant of their presence and ignore their presence. To them, all that is important is to find, remove and fix/replace the defective part/person---and if that part/person is made to feel shame and/or guilt, that is just a natural part of the process of fixing what is wrong. In the typical engineer's paradigm, there is no reason for having any regret or concern about a natural part of the process of fixing the community. From the point of view of people who are sensitive to, and perceptive of, reflexive realities and relationships---one of the keys to helping a dysfunctional community recover health is to discover the roots of alienation and estrangement, and to work to facilitate open and honest communication within and among the members of the community. Such people do not intervene to remove, fix and/or replace defective parts. The whole community is not seen primarily in terms of parts. Such people are not ignorant of, or prone to, ignore or take advantage of guilt and shame. Their integrative approach to a dysfunctional community is quite different from that of the typical communal engineer---for they can see far more than can the typical communal engineer can see, understand and deal with.
