They lack self esteem which is rooted in their own being true to themselves and to each other. They seek self esteem which is rooted in being with others and for others---regardless of what the costs may be. They seek others who are like them in seeking self esteem in being with others and for others. To them loyalty and solidarity with others is more important than are ideals, values and principles. To them loyalty is more important than personal and/or communal integrity. When the choice is between integrity, honesty, health and conflict resolution on the one side---and loyalty to and solidarity with some groups of which they are a part; the choice is to be loyal in solidarity, no matter what the costs. Insecure people have not been offered and/or have not accepted security as the freedom to be safely vulnerable. They seek to achieve security through defenses, often working with a group of people who are loyal to each other and/or to some narrowly defined set of goals which the group seeks to achieve. Their groups are more likely to be goal-oriented than to be dedicated to processes which promote personal and communal integrity. Their groups are more likely to be preoccupied with technologies which they believe can get them to their goals, than they are likely to be sensitive to personal and communal integration and/or disintegration---and what leads to each. The range of kinds of groups within which loyalty and solidarity play the dominant roles described above is wide: husband/wife, extended families, teen-age cliques, inner city gangs, tribes, employer/employee, churches, schools, colleges, universities, cities, states, nations, ethnic groups, racial groups, professions, etc. There is great danger when within such groups the commitments to the groups and their goals are not qualified by considerations of the transcendent importance of: personal integrity, communal integrity, global integrity, honesty, healthy personal relationships, being true to self and others, learning from mistakes, learning from different people, etc. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
