The extensive use of verbal tools is one of the most distinguishing characteristics of humans. Insecure people who wish to defend themselves against the recognition and acknowledgement of their oneness with "lower creatures" often refuse to acknowledge the limited powers of verbal tools. Many tragedies flow from refusing to acknowledge the limitations of verbal tools as indicated above and below. When people dishonestly seek to fulfill the possibilities which they perceive only through the filters of their attitudes, assumptions, beliefs, emotions, visions and joys---they confuse themselves and others as they try to contain, communicate, manage and control much through the exclusive use of verbal tools. They thus generate alienation which blocks, undermines and represses open and honest communication, perception and understanding---and so fulfill tragic possibilities rather than integrative possibilities. Verbal tools can be used most helpfully only within secure contexts where all people have been exchanging truly free gifts of the freedom to be safely vulnerable--- because liberating communications, perceptions and understandings depend upon the freedom of the recipients, as much as upon the powers of the manipulators of verbal tools. In the absence of true freedoms for all members of our community, our verbal tools cannot be fully and helpfully used in integrative ways. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
