Extensive programs of scientific medical care by professional doctors and hospital personnel are not the essence of healthy communities. Quick access to extensive medical services, drugs, surgery and emergency treatments in crisis situations is not the essence of a healthy community. Extensive medical treatments for terminally ill patients are not the essence of a healthy community. The essence of a healthy community is to be found in healthy patterns of ideals, values, attitudes, beliefs, and communal networks of open and honest communications about all kinds of human experiences. In the absence of such healthy patterns, a community with extensive medical technologies and services is likely to be diseased through its addictions to fixes; including medical fixes. Healthy communities pay more attention to healthy patterns of ideals, values, attitudes, beliefs and communal networks of open and honest communications about all kinds of human experiences; than they pay attention to preparing for crisis interventions and medical fixes. A gram of healthy prevention is better than a kilogram of cure. It is not as dramatic; but is it far better. The problem with healthy programs of prevention is that they do not celebrate the kinds of sweet technological fixes which bring high levels of attention to the celebrants of high technology. Healthy programs of prevention are not technologically sweat and do not bring high levels of profits to those people who promote the healthy programs. Successful programs minimize the need for high cost crisis interventions. Programs which focus upon preparation for crisis intervention maximize the need for high cost crisis interventions; and maximize the profits to those people who are experts in crisis interventions. In a capitalistic community the economic system promotes profitable crisis intervention, rather than healthy programs of community health maintenance. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
