That which we create to serve as the means to our salvation becomes the idolatrous god of our damnation. When we try to be in control of our own salvation through some system of conformal rules which define what we and others must do to be saved; that which we create to serve as the means to our salvation becomes the idolatrous god of our damnation. We cannot through clever manipulative use of holy scriptures, books, rituals, doctrines, institutions, objects, relationships, and beings---assure our salvation through conformity to some system of conformal rules which define what we and others must do to be saved. To enjoy salvation we must come to the point where in desperation we are willing to let go of our clever manipulative uses of holy: scriptures, books, rituals, doctrines, institutions, objects, relationships, and beings---to try to assure our salvation through conformity to some system of conformal rules which define what we and others must do to be saved. We cannot save ourselves through our use of our false gods. This is the descriptive significance of the first of the Ten Commandments, and of the New Testament revelations of the misinterpretations of the Just Commandment by people trying to use the Ten Commandments to achieve salvation. When we eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil which is in the middle of the Garden of Eden, we in that eating become eager to clutch our clever manipulative uses of holy scriptures, books, rituals, doctrines, institutions, objects, relationships, and beings---to try to assure our own individualistic salvation through conformity to some system of rules which define what we and others must do to be saved. We cannot be objectively sure of the value of such reflexive knowledge of the difference between good and evil; but still we pretend otherwise in self-righteous arrogance. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
