Too often the addictive person feels and believes that self is defective, unworthy, in need of a fix. The fix sought may be any of many forms: drugs, hyperactivity, work, persons, romance, sexuality, doctrines, diversions, technologies, etc. Some addicts seek their fix in some person who is to make things right for the addict; a savior who has the fix or is the fix. The addict seeks the services of a codependent savior who will play dishonest games of mutual self deception with the addict---on terms dictated by the addict. If an addict cannot get a real person to play the desired games, the addict may play the game of self deception alone; believing that some vision of a person will fulfill the necessary role of savior. In fantasy the addict seeks salvation with or without the aid of drugs, hyperactivity, work, persons, romance, sexuality, doctrines, diversions, technologies, etc. Losing contact with reality makes confidence in one's visions and beliefs easier to maintain. Alienation and estrangement from other kinds of people makes it easier to believe that one's own ways of seeing the world is reliable. Being together with like friends who are alienated and estranged from different kinds of people; makes it even easier to believe that one's own group of like friends have ways of seeing the world which are utterly reliable. Fanaticism can be engendered to repress any lingering doubts about the effectiveness of the saving fix. The fanaticism can even be made to appear Godly if there is enough Spirit-Talk and God-Talk; and if there are enough carefully selected references to useful, usable and abuseable Holy Scriptures.
