They shape the conceptions of reality that citizens use in making political decisions. Deep seated convictions about human nature flow from the classroom and from the quality of personal relationships between teachers and students. Attitudes about how best to cope in trying situations are transmitted from teachers to students. Patterns of how to formulate basic questions originate in the classroom context. Notions of values develop through what is treated with respect in the classroom, what is treated with disdain, and what is ignored. Tomorrow's political priorities are swayed by today's classroom teachers. Today's teachers were greatly influenced by their professors in colleges and universities. By and large those professors are specialists, with rather narrow conceptions of reality. They are more concerned with objective evidence, analysis and academic truth, than they are with promoting meaningful personal relationships and communal cooperation. Should such people be given the political power to shape the lives of the teachers who will mold our youth into tomorrow political leaders? Are objectivity and analysis the most basic values needed in promoting the public welfare? Might it be that concern for balanced personal and communal integrity are more essential?
