Human behavior plays to audiences, real or imagined. People who are alienated from real other people are prone to play to audiences which are real only in their fantasies. Due to their alienation the people in their fantasies may, or may not, correspond to real or possible real people. Their audiences are not objectively real and tend to be manipulated as much by the alienated desires of the actors as by objectively real circumstances. People who are compulsively objective and analytic are likely to become alienated from real people, and so find it necessary to play to fantasy audiences which are not objectively real; just real in their imaginations, hopes and fears. The way such fantasy people react to the acting of the fantasizer of course depends upon the conceptions of the fantasizer and is given meanings similarly conceived. Ideals, values and objectives grow in the fantasy world, not in real dialogue among differing peoples who are in open and honest subjective communication with each other. Such fantasies are likely to be projected into the future as the place where they will become real. Behavior now is justified in terms of fantasies about the future, rather than by meeting in the eternal now. In alienation the difference between a real person in the eternal now and a fantasy audience in the desired future may be a difference which is lost in wishful considerations. Present behavior may not take into consideration the difference between personal presence and fantasy, between being with integrity and being in a fantasy world which is alienated from meeting others with integrity in the eternal now of personal presence. On the other hand, fantasy may be the way to escape from a coercive collusion in which real meeting is denied in favor of legalistic conformity. In fantasy real new possibilities may be realized in ways that lead to their realization in real meetings with personal integrity. Such fantasies seek a real audience rather than constitute an escape from real audiences. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
