Personal rejection is such a threat to personal self-esteem and integrity that even rejection by a casual acquaintance is discomforting. It is somewhat painful to be personally rejected by someone whom you were moderately inclined to regard as a friend, for rejection by someone with whom one shares common experiences, perspectives, ideals and values threatens one's own sense of wholeness. It is really threatening and painful to be personally rejected by one of your closest friends with whom one has become personally identified and shared much in common. Such a rejection tears at the fabric of one's own sense of personal integrity, one's sense of who one is. Such a rejection calls into question one's continuing sense of what one stands for. It is hard to continue to have a sense of personal security under the shadow of rejection by one close friend. What if you are personally rejected by all your closest friends, moderate friends,, and casual acquaintances? Suppose that they as a matter of high principle feel that they are duty bound to personally reject you. How then are you to maintain your self esteem and personal integrity? How then can you be sure of what you stand for? What is one to do if all members of one's own community feel duty bound to threaten to personally reject you if you are true to your deepest sense of what is true, fair, just, and right? How is one to make sense of such a sense of duty? Suppose that in an effort to free members of your community from such a perverse sense of duty you become a suffering servant teaching people how to pray for both personal and communal integrity, and because of your efforts are rejected by all, are crucified, dead and buried. Suppose that through your efforts some gain insight and in your name seek to preach a gospel of reconciliation, but others transform that gospel into a set of criteria which clearly articulate the knowledge of good and evil, and the sufficient grounds for personally rejecting those people who do not conform to proper behavior defined in terms of that knowledge of good and evil?
