The contrary behavior which is required may be overt or covert, legal or illegal, generous or selfish, gentle or violent, good or evil, etc. The coercion is the coercion of a will by another will. The conflict is a conflict between or among will which represent conflict among ideals. The person who inflicts coercion does not serve the ideal of promoting open and honest dialogue in contexts within which people may safely be intimate in vulnerable relationships; i.e., be secure. The practice of coercion undermines the possibility of security known as the freedom to be vulnerable within meaningful intimate relationships. To be "successful" coercion must be violent; i.e., must violate the integrity of the person who is coerced. The violence may take any one or more of many forms: physical, chemical, nuclear, psychological, economic, religious, philosophical, political, familial, sexual, etc. Intellectual violence does violence to intellectual truth, clarity, logic expression, insight, etc. Intellectual coercion seeks to force one person to think and feel in accordance with the will of another; violating academic and constitutional freedoms of communication and political expression.
