It is not easy to understand this conception of the character of evil ideals, because so many highly respected ideals are in practice evil ideals; ideals which are respected by highly respected intelligent people of good will. The fact is that many such people occasion much alienation by persistently being guided by their dedication to their ideals. It is not easy to help them assess their ideals in terms of more transcendent ideals. An example of an evil ideal is the ideal that college and university professors should be prepared for their professorial instructional responsibilities by carrying out sophisticated research projects unrelated to students learning difficulties. Many intelligent professors of good will are occasioning much alienation by their uncritical dedication to this ideal---to the exclusion of any dedication to helping prepare future professors to sympathetically help college and university students overcome their learning difficulties.
