I now doubt that anybody can. The ideals of research oriented physicists do violence to personal and communal integrity by failing to include personal and communal integrity as transcendent ideals in terms of which to judge the wisdom of affirmations of instrumental ideals. The problem of presenting traditional physics with associated ideals and integrity is not a technical problem. Technically sophisticated physicists who have only dim memories of dreams of integrity sometimes attempt to find the technology through which to teach traditional physics with integrity. Their sincere efforts usually lead to tragic consequences which are rarely recognized as such. Ideals which require the violation of personal and communal integrity can not be central to any educational program which is characterized by personal and communal integrity. For graduate physics students to fulfill physicists' ideals they must do violence to the more personal aspects of their being. The tragic consequence is that they become respected physicists by ceasing to be fully human. People who have ceased to be fully human are incapable of using any technology to promote personal and communal integrity. They lack the vision needed to anticipate the human meaning of the affirmation of various technologies, and so are unable to make wise decisions regarding which instrumental ideals are most likely to promote personal and communal integrity in each situation. People who have sold their integrity in order to achieve technical competence---are likely to sacrifice the personal and communal integrity of others to demonstrate their technical competence, since that is all that they have left to value. Such demonstrations are cries for personal acceptance by those people whose integrity is violated by the demonstrations; yet the tragic consequence of the demonstrations of technocratic sophistication is alienation.
