The spirit and way pertain to making decisions about goals, rather than drawing conclusions about how to achieve chosen goals. Technologies help people achieve chosen goals. A liberal education liberates young people to wisely choose goals which will give communal meaning to their lives. Technologies empower people to understand, predict and control in ways chosen for reasons which transcend technology. Technological considerations influence further decisions regarding the means to be used to achieve the chosen goals, and so may be either compatible or incompatible with the spirit and way in which the original goals were chosen. If the technologies dominate the subsequent decision making process, instead of being guided by the original way and spirit in which the goals were chosen, then the community degenerates into a technocratic community which worships techniques which undermine the integrity of the community and cause the fall of it's civilized pattern of behavior. Great civilizations are expressions of great ways in which the spirit of men and women find to cooperate to give meaning to their communal lives. The technologies which are chosen and developed are not the keys to great civilizations, and are not the central focus of the educational systems of great civilizations. Great educational systems are those which retain their original spirit and ways of making decisions regarding relative priorities, values and importances---while choosing appropriate technologies which embody particular skills, knowledge, and modes of understanding, predicting and controlling. In the educational system of a great civilization the focus is not upon any particular skills, knowledge, or modes of understanding, predicting or controlling. The focus is rather upon passing on the wisdom of the civilization's great spirit and way of making decisions both individually and communally. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
