The significance of participants in a mutual relationship depends upon other participants, and upon the nature of their mutual relationships---which help define the natures of the participants and the development of their respective relationships. The self perception of the web of mutual relationships by participants in the community of mutuality, depends upon the way the participants and their relationships are created by the dynamic process of mutually relating. Humans always engage in self-referential relationships: sometimes intimate, alienative; integrative, violent; cooperative, competitive; creative, destructive, etc. Humans act on the stage of their own imagination, if not on the stage seeking the approval of others. Sometimes they act on an imaginary stage seeking their own approval via their imagination of the approval of others. Such acting is self-referential in that it seeks to develop bonds of significance by trying to be significant to people who one wishes to be significant to oneself. Most human behavior is in this sense a game which people play on the stage of life, in meaningful self-referential ways. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
