Such people often do not regard it as their duty to say anything supportive to people who are answerable to them and have fulfilled their duty. Fulfillment of duty is regarded as normative and not worthy of comment. Only failure to fulfill duty is worthy of comment. They feel it is their duty to point out all instances of failure to fulfill duty, and so most of their supervisory comments are negative in character. It is not in their personal character to be supportive of other persons out of a personal interest. Any "personal interest" which they may have in others tends to be out of a sense of duty, and so any "personal interest" which they may have in others tends to be out of a sense of duty, and so their "personal interest" tends to be perverted and not genuinely supportive. People who are under an obligation to succeed tend to be less successful that people who are genuinely interested and motivated by internal desires and aspirations. When they are supervised by people who lay upon them a duty to succeed, they tend to become resentful of the pressures to conform to the desires, expectations, values, and directions of others. An atmosphere of duty to succeed tends to undermine the interests, desires, curiosity, and aspirations which motivate genuine success. Meaningful personal activities and successes are motivated from within, not the result of motivations imposed from without. People are not driven to meaningful success by external motivations. Students are not driven to meaningful learning by teachers who are demanding in assignments and expectations. Helpful teachers nurture personal developments in students, which promote the growth of internal personal motivations, which lead students into meaningful and fulfilling activities, which they will in retrospect regard as success. Meaningful personal success is not a goal which may be attained by technical means; neither can it be given to others by technical means.
