Many realities exist because of individual and social choices, both conscious and mythic. When a society is dissatisfied with some of its social realities, some of its members may have visions of new possible realities, and suggest them. Members of the society may be ill at ease with such new visions because they lack confidence in any ground for secure social realization of the visions. They may fear that there may be great risks in the realization of new realities apart from a known ground, a foundation, for the realization of the new vision. We may both yearn for and fear the realization of a known new vision. The new vision may give new meaning to lives which have become meaningless under the control of technologies which provide both the means and the ends upon which the lives are focused. Technocrats may feel the meaninglessness of their lives and yearn for new meaning, and yet fear the realization of a vision which would direct their lives in meaningful new directions. The technocrats may fear that they would no longer have control of their own lives, and that their lives might be directed by powers which transcend themselves. Their fear originates in part in their belief that their lives are meaningful to the extent that they control themselves. Thus, they are blocked from discovering meaning in dedication to visions which transcend themselves. Their technologies give them no grounds for any secure social realization of any visions which transcend technocracy. The ground for secure social realization of new visions resides in values which are acknowledged to transcend all technologies, all means of achieving explicit goals which are technologically attainable. People who would transcend their technologies and realize non-technocratic visions must clarify, and dedicate themselves to values which affirm values as persons and communities which have integrity. Once they have recognized and affirmed the values which are most central to the personal and communal integrity, they will have grounds for secure social realizations of new visions.
