Such concerns pertain to realities which may lie hidden beneath the overt and consciously analyzable behavior of such other person or persons. Even behaviorists share in such concerns about others' feelings and thoughts, even when others are trying to conceal their feelings and thoughts by trying to avoid overt behavior which would reveal how they feel and what they think. This concern about others' private thoughts and feelings distinguishes real persons from automata, machines, computers, etc. The concern is privately made manifest in our private thoughts and feelings about what we believe others are thinking and feeling, and in response to our presence and memories of our presence. Behaviorists try to discount other persons' thoughts and feelings which are not manifested in analyzable behavior of an objective sort. Their theories and research pretends that there are no private thoughts and feelings which merit scientists' professional concern. Such behaviorists behave as if they were motivated by a concern regarding the feelings and thoughts of successful objective scientists, who focus their attention only upon objective realities. It is hard to understand their behavior without believing that they have feelings and thoughts, which drive them to behave in ways which they think and feel will earn them the favorable attention of those whom they respect. One can not help but wonder if behaviorists analyze their own behavior without regard for their own feelings and thoughts. If one is aware of one's own feelings, thoughts, and body; why would one presume that others with similar bodies and overt behavior would not have similar feelings and thoughts? How is one to meaningfully understand the behavior of creatures which refuse to perceive obvious similarities between themselves and other creatures which are very much like themselves? Perhaps it is due to some very private belief in their superiority over others, and a felt need for a regal distance between themselves and their inferior fellow creatures. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
