It is much trickier to rebel, or with integrity follow, one of two motivations---when the two motivations pertain to doing the same overt act. In such cases the perceived human meaning may not so much be in the action itself, as in the motivation for the act. How then is it possible to affirm one motivation for the act while not affirming the alternative motivation for the act: One motivation may be healthy, while the alternative motivation is unhealthy. To refuse to act because of the unhealthy motivation's existence, will result in a denial of the healthy motivation, and vice versa. How is the act, or the failure to perform the act, to be perceived and understood by self and others? What human meaning is to be associated with the conflict and its manner of resolution? The exclusively objectively oriented person will denigrate consideration of motivations and urge that attention be focused exclusively upon the objective act. To such a person there is no problem. The issue of rebelling against a motivation can not exist in a meaningful way. Subjective awareness of the issue is of no significance to the exclusively objective person. Significance can be given only to overt behavior, or to physiological responses which can be objectively verified with scientific instruments. In instances of parallel motivation it is difficult for a person to know with any confidence which motivation is the prevailing motivation, and so it is even more difficult to seek to vest the act with clear meaning which originates in the motivation. Such difficulty is especially great as regards the perception of other people and the meanings which they attribute to acts. Parallel motivations often originate in cognitive vs emotional, utilitarian vs affective, systematic vs spontaneous, intellectual vs instinctive sources. Conflicts between dichotomous sources are often implicit in parallel motivations, and how we respond to such conflicts can be of great consequence. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
