Each sub-culture of specialization has a tendency to promote technical specialization which focuses upon the techniques which are highly valued by the sub-culture. The more narrow is the focus of attention in such specialization---the more likely it is to exclude from consideration experiences, insights, relationships, concepts, etc. which are essential to being free to participate meaningfully in humane dialogue and cooperative activities. These considerations are especially important to the teachers of any specialized techniques. To acquire the competency in techniques which is expected of them---such persons often narrow their focus of attention so much that they become insensitive to the signs that their relationships with their students are unhealthy and even violent. The more narrow is the focus of such teachers, the more likely it is that such teachers will need to reach outside their profession of specialization to receive the insights which will set them free to be more effective teachers. Intensification of affirmation of the narrow values of their profession will only confirm the exclusion of the insights which are essential to the improvement of their instructional activities. Only as such specialists come to recognize the hazards of over- specialization---can they consider the possibility that they need to accept help from outside their sub-culture of specialization. When specialists seek to be in dialogue with complementary specialists they are most likely to experience the difficulties which are characteristic of any effort to communicate across cultural boundaries. Differences in assumptions, role models, language, expectations, experiences, etc. make dialogue quite difficult. The more highly specialized are the persons involved, the less likely it is that they will have commonalties in terms of which to develop understanding. Thus, even when specialists are earnestly seeking to understand each other, they are bound to have difficulties. Often specialists have no interest in seeking to understand each other, and are thus bound to have even greater difficulties in dealing with each other. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
